Holly Skye

So this girl has been doing photography for most of her life and does such an amazing job that I wanted to share her work with people who may not have heard of her. She does a lot of work involving social commentary and the influence of music on life and society. Keep in mind that she is (I believe) 16 years old and some of that can be reflected in her images and attitude but overall her work is beautiful, I especially enjoy the ones surrounding anorexia and can look at the general collection for hours. In respect of her work I will only post a link to my favorite image of her’s here and not any actually photos but they can all be viewed on her flickr account which will be the second link below.

The Scott Kelby Old School Photo Challenge: Image Five

On May 29th I participated in a worldwide photo challenge started by a Mr. Scott Kelby, a photographer that I both respect and learn a lot from. I will lay out the basic rules of the challenge here before I go into how I shot them.

  • You have to shoot either 24 or 36 exposures as that used to be the standard sizes for a roll of 35mm film.
  • You have to cover the LCD of your camera so that you can't see any settings or change any menu options.
  • ISO cannot be changed throughout the entire challenge as ISO was a part of the film and not a camera option.
  • The images cannot be reviewed in any way for a day as that was the time you used to have to wait for them to process.
  • There can be no photoshopping or editing of any kind
  • You must make at least one print

So with these rules in place I set out with a beautiful lady as an assistant and walked through town for about 3 hours in the heat shooting 24 exposures with duct tape over my LCD, my ISO set to 400 and my D60 set to Black & White. The next 5 photos are the results of this challenge. I will post each of them in succession over the next 4 days with this same text and a comment at the bottom about the photo itself. Hope you enjoy this experiment as much as I did.

This one was by far my favorite of them all. I absolutely love the juxtaposition of the graffiti and the model mixed with the expression. This is one of my favorite commentary images yet and I can't wait to run it through a little photoshop and get it sent to print.

This shot was my least favorite of the 5 that I kept, I felt it was worth it for the perspective simply because of the challenge but other than that I don't have much to say about it, I have a lot of ideas to use at this location though.

Tomorrow will be my favorite of all the five shots though, I've really enjoyed it.

This place stood out against everything around it and just screamed look at me, I'm monolithic!

My wonderful assistant Kristy helped me out by modeling for this one. It seemed like such a comfortable place to take a break in the shade and I liked the angle of the concrete with the blockade.

This one is a church in town that really stands out against the clear blue sky. What I could do to this photo in photoshop makes my fingers ache because I want to make it better so much but in sticking with the challenge I will post it as it was shot without any editing.
